August 12, 2010 - SOOKE, BC. In the space of about 30 hours there were four vehicle-related accidents on Sooke Road / West Coast Road, as attended by the Sooke RCMP, August 10 and 11. As a curiosity, three of them were reported at 25-minutes past the hour.

Details were learned from Staff-Sergeant Steve Wright, Sooke RCMP, in a telephone interview with MapleLine Magazine on August 13.

The first incident, reported on Tuesday afternoon, August 10, at 3:25 pm, a single vehicle bounced off the roadside rocks and landed in the middle of the road. When police arrived the car was vacant; a police dog was brought in but did not track anyone. Traffic was backed up significantly until the car could be moved and the scene assessed. The investigation is ongoing with the registered owner of the vehicle.

The second incident, reported on Tuesday evening at 6:10 pm, occurred at Polymede Place and Sooke Road (just a bit Sooke-side of the 17 Mile Pub and Adrenaline). Two vehicles were reported to be involved, but a single vehicle rollover had occurred, with one injured person taken to hospital; there was no indication of what caused the accident but rocks were clipped and a hydro pole showed impact-damage. The vehicle may have had a mechanical defect. The driver of the vehicle – a 53-year-old Sooke woman – was arrested the next morning on an unrelated offence. Both vehicles were blocking traffic east and westbound for a considerable time.

Then Wednesday night, August 11, an accident reported at 7:25 pm involved one motorcycle rider whose bike slipped on the road shoulder and flipped several times, with the bike ultimately landing on top of the driver. The driver was one of 15 motorcyclists heading southbound on Gillespie Road at Sooke Road; the one driver – a 35–year-old Victoria resident – seems to have turned too soon and his bike lost control. He was taken to Victoria General Hospital with unknown injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The investigation is ongoing.

Also on Wednesday night farther along – on West Coast Road just past Sombrio Beach – a motor home that had been purchased by some Dutch tourists lost brake function and came to a stop upon contacting some logs. Injuries were minor. The incident was reported at 8:25 pm. Sooke RCMP confirmed mechanical brake failure. A tow truck was there August 12 to remove the damaged vehicle.
