SOOKE NEWSMAKERS of the YEAR

MapleLine's pick for 2009

Scott Gertsma (outgoing Past President, Sooke Harbour Chamber of Commerce) for spearheading a change in focus of the Sooke Harbour Chamber of Commerce to broaden its sites to regional issues (particularly as related to tourism), now as the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce.

Mayor Janet Evans (District of Sooke) for targeting sewer installations as the top accomplishment by the District of Sooke in the past 10 years and focussing on town centre development. The District's 10th anniversary was celebrated Dec.7, 2009.

Gwen Fisher (outgoing President, Sooke Harbour Chamber of Commerce) for merging the longstanding Santa Claus parade and 2nd annual sailpast with a town centre business-sponsored family-event all rolled into the 1st annual Sooke Spirit Festival on December 5, 2009. Bodes well for winter tourism in Sooke.

Mary P. Brooke (publisher, Brookeline Publishing House Inc.) for establishing MapleLine Magazine as a second major news service for Sooke and launching a local professional journalism career training school to serve adult learners.

Tell us your top 3 picks for newsmakers of 2009. Submissions will be published in the January 4, 2010 ebulletin.
