BEYOND SOOKE

Health care reform succeeds in the US.
On Sunday, March 21, CNN ran continuous live coverage of the vote for health care reform in the US House of Representatives. A vote of 219 yay to 212 nay (216 was the required count for a win) ushered in a new era of health services for the nation that has wrestled with the issues of public health care for over 100 years. Obama made a victory speech live at 11:45 pm Eastern Time: "This is what change looks like," Obama said during a short speech from the East Room at the White House. Now 32 million Americans (previously without health care coverage) will have health insurance, and a crackdown on insurance company abuses is part of the deal.

"When faced with a crisis we did not shrink from challenge, we overcame it. We did not avoid our responsibility, we embraced it. We did not fear our future, we shaped it." ~ US President Barack Obama, March 21, 2010. Click to see video of Obama's speech (8 minutes).
