A public display place for art created by youth encourages their creative expression and helps balance the often negative impressions of youth participation and involvement within the community. A visual tangible reminder of this is manifested in the art on display in the bus shelter on Sooke Road (in front of Village Food Markets) as part of the Student Art Bus Shelter project.

The adornment of functional bus shelters is welcomed by all who use them. The addition of art has engaged commuters and passers-by and has added visual interest and diversity to the central location. Those waiting for the bus often end up in discussions about the artwork.

Ms. Susan Garat, Art Department Head at Edward Milne Community School, has supported the project to the point of including it in her senior level curriculum.

Financial support for bus shelter art has come from the District of Sooke via the Community Grant Review Committee, the Sooke Lioness Lions, Sooke Lions and Sooke Fine Arts. Future art displays will depend on other avenues of fundraising and support.  MM
