Donald C. Mills has put Sooke "on the map" for hundreds if not thousands of hikers worldwide, due to the enduring success of his Juan de Fuca Marine Trail Guidebook Giant Cedars White Sands, now in its 10th year of publication.

Don's book has contributed to safe and interesting hikes by people who come to Sooke as a result of reading his book which explains the 4-day hike (and breaks it down into day hikes, including little known details about side trails).

Don was a Tourism and Recreation award finalist at the Sooke Harbour Chamber of Commerce awards event in November 2008.
