"I was born and raised in Sooke so my contacts and local knowledge are far-reaching. The people of this town are passionate about this place and the quality of life it provides. I became a councillor to help preserve the rights of the common Sooke person and it is my intention to listen and to speak out when called upon. We can all benefit from the great leaders that built this place, so to respect that legacy I will try to walk in their footsteps." ~ Herb Haldane, December 15, 2009

In a note to the media on December 15, 2009 Haldane expressed his concerns about the residential tax rate in Sooke, saying that 93% of the District of Sooke's tax revenues come from residential taxes. A Dec.4/09 District of Sooke release showed the average residential tax in Sooke at $1,583 -- the second lowest in the Capital Regional District, higher only than Langford's at $1,416.  However, Haldane points out that property values are lower here, so taxes per household are relatively high for Sooke residents.

He contributed a commentary about agriculture and rural land to the Fall 2010 issue of MapleLine Magazine.
