GUEST EDITORIAL AS APPEARED in MAPLELINE MAGAZINE, Winter-Spring 2010, page 7:

Comparing food consumed with food produced in various regions, Sooke ranked at the very bottom of the list for dairy, fruit and vegetable self-sufficiency, according to a study by Dr. Alex Ostry. This research is based on amount of ALR land that exists compared to the amount of ALR land previous to 1974. Check out this information on the map at www.sierraclub.bc.ca/quick-links/publications/s2sgbs_sooke_v2.pdf -- however, a dedicated band of locals who are passionate about food are working hard to improve these conditions and they could use your help.

The Sooke Region Food CHI Society has a variety of projects and events in full swing. One program involves new farmers being paired with more experienced growers to learn the ins and outs of the business. The pilot project occurs this year with eight participants spending time on established farms to learn the challenges that face new farmers. They will gain advice on how to lay out their farm and market their products.

Another success is the allotment garden at Sunriver. To date, 46 plots are assigned to community members and a waiting list is being taken. Everyone is eligible and costs are minimal in part due to a partnership with The District of Sooke. Organizers will build on this success for future locations.

Now as spring approaches, are you starting to think about what to plant in your own garden? The First Annual ‘Seedy Saturday’ in Sooke is set for February 27 at SEAPARC (10 am to 2 pm). Building on the success of last year, the Fruit Tree Project will again be running in Sooke. If you would like to volunteer or you have trees that will need picking, contact Jessica Boquist, Food CHI Coordinator, 250-589-2577 to schedule a pick.

Last year Food CHI participated in the Rotary Auction, T-Souke Nation Solar Day, the Community Garden Day, Sooke Fall Fair and Awareness Film Night. A day of local farm visits for politicians was also held to strengthen partnerships and bring firsthand farm experience to our elected officials. Food CHI also produced the Sooke Region Food and Farm Guide which highlights local farms, restaurants and businesses that feature local produce. You can find the guide at sookefoodchi.ca .

Looking forward, Food CHI members are keen to hold a film festival, host gardening and growing workshops, and develop some youth and children’s gardening programs among other ideas. Membership in Sooke Food CHI is open to everyone.

In my career as a nutritionist and yoga instructor I see firsthand the benefits of eating healthy food and paying attention to the needs of body and community.

Where do you see yourself in the food chain? How much do you like eating fresh local food? Now is the time to sow the seeds for our future generations. Check out sookefoodchi.ca to find out how you can get involved.
