Earth Hour / Climate Change

SOOKE, Mar.29, 2010. Cities around the world turned off lights for 60 minutes Saturday night, March 27 (8:30 to 9:30 pm, local time), as a form of awareness-raising about climate change. "Climate change is real," says Guy Dauncey, a Victoria-based environmentalist. In Toronto, where power usage dropped 10%, that was the equivalent of taking 250 homes off the grid for one hour, it was reported on the Weather Channel. Last year for this event, Sooke had the highest level of participation in Earth Hour, of all communities in BC, it was reported by the District of Sooke in 2009. "We need to be protecting our environment for future generations," said Dauncey.  This year the overall provincial electrical load dropped 1.04%, says BC Hydro, adding that if the same conservation measures were implemented one hour every evening, the combined energy savings would be enough to power close to 2,200 homes for a year.

Ocean floor aids climate research

VICTORIA, Dec.16, 2009. Ocean floor samples from along the Pacific coast (that may provide clues to climate change going back 12,000 years) will be retrieved by the School of Environment and Sustainability at Royal Roads University. The research will be funded in part by the Canada Foundation for Innovation which today awarded $175,875 to support the research headed by assistant professor Audrey Dallimore.
