Summer just wouldn't seem complete without the Sooke Fine Arts Show.

Back again for their 23rd year, the adjudicated art show and community event has built a "must go and see" reputation throughout Greater Victoria. Over 7,500 visitors are expected at the 10-day show this year between its morning opening July 25 to closing time on BC Day holiday Monday.

This show is so well done that the sports arena venue becomes transformed into the look and feel of a big city art gallery. There is room to walk about with ease; you can stay for hours to ponder, peruse and purchase original works of art.

Well-know and emerging artists from Vancouver Island and the Gulf Island showcase their work; the submission deadline for up to three pieces of art is May 29. Last year 56 of the 244 registered artists were from the Sooke area.

Hundreds of art patrons from BC, Western Canada and the USA have attended each year. Evonne Black is this year's SFA President; Bev Petow is past-president.

The non-profit Sooke Fine Arts Society (SFAS) has, in its third year, opened a new permanent office space at 1-6631 Sooke Road in town centre. In addition to the show, the non-profit group hosts public learning opportunities about art techniques.

The purchaser's preview night (this year on July 23 from 5 to 10 pm) is what produces those little SOLD stickers before the public even arrive son the first Saturday morning -- fun for the early purchasers but a little deflating for eager attendees in the first few days. Only invited guests and sponsors will attend the July 24 awards evening. A raffle, silent auction and musical entertainment are lined up.

A juried show adds panache to what is otherwise just a decorated room. It looks good on Sooke to pull off such a professional event.  MM
