Commercial and recreational fishing are significantly less active than in recent years and the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society (SSES) works hard at protecting and increasing the local supply of BC's most popular fish species.

"The Sooke River has only 6 km in which fish can spawn," says Rob Henderson, SSES secretary. A small salmon-bearing stream near Whiffin Spit Road carries a small supply of coho fry. "Coho will go into unbelievably small waters," he says. Anyone who has water flowing in their backyard can check with SSES or the Pacific Office of Fisheries and Oceans Canada to find out about protecting the wildlife.
The SSES (run by about 70 volunteers) is holding its Chinook Salmon Derby, a major fundraiser, this coming BC Day long weekend (August 1 and 2). They are hoping to sell 350 tickets ($50 ticket includes the awards banquet at Sooke Flats). All sponsors will be recognized, says SSES president Mel Hull. Various projects, including a sea pen in Sooke Harbour and a lake pen for coho, are outlined at www.sookesalmonenhancementsociety.com .
