Canada Day #143

Image capture from television broadcast of the Queen's speech from Ottawa, July 1, 2010. MapleLine Magazine. On Thursday, July 1, 2010 there are celebrations across Canada for the 143rd anniversary of Canada's confederation. Queen Elizabeth II presided at an outdoor concert in Ottawa on the grounds of the Canadian Parliament buildings. She made a noticeable shift of facial expression with these words in her speech: "Even in trying times..." while referring to Canadians being supportive and resilient. "Canadians have a caring home for its own," she said in a 2-minute speech that was nationally televised by CBC TV. She remarked that the 2010 Winter Games in BC served to "renew a sense of common purpose" for Canadians.  Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in his remarks about immigrants to Canada: "With the world to choose from, they have chosen 'I will be Canadian' ".

Commentary for July 1, 2010 by Mary P. Brooke

~ as published in MapleLine Magazine: May 5, 2010

With the big bang of the 2010 Winter Olympics behind us and the addition of a few new sports heroes to our Canada-wide cultural map, what about Canada is there to celebrate? Well, absolutely everything!

We are a nation of peace-seeking people in a world filled with strife. While our health care system is imperfect, it serves one and all in striking comparison to the US health debacle (despite Obama’s best efforts) that leaves still millions uninsured and living daily with fingers crossed they don’t get sick, or jockeying for the best bid on health insurance policy purchases. We still have clean water (though BC is selling rights away on that), relatively ample electric power, and farms to grow fresh food on.

Whether it’s hanging a flag outside your house, a few hours of fun at the annual Canada Day celebration in Sooke, or a backyard barbecue, live it well this July 1st. We are the richest nation on Earth.  MM
