It
all starts with a phone call from the bride.
Hair for one, or all for hairstyles -- customizing the beauty
preparation for the bride's big day is what it's all about at Pure
Elements in Sooke.
While bride and entourage are having manicures and pedicures, the rest of the contingent is usually off to see the sights of Sooke. Back at the seaview salon run by Gwen Fisher, each member of the wedding party is treated with custom care – hair styles to suit each person, and time taken to do it right.
“Remember to bring your head piece and wear the same bra as you’ll wear at the wedding,” says Fisher. That way the hair holds the headpiece properly and the style suits the dress. Wearing a button-down shirt is important, so that hair is not mussed when it comes time for the unveiling of the new style.
“And no makeup!” That way the makeup artist can achieve her goals better. “But do bring your favourite products for eyes and skin, and we’ll work with you,” says the experienced Fisher, who enthuses about the process of helping everyone look their best for their wedding day. On that note, considerations for photography – the lasting memoir – are important. The bride’s photographer may come to the salon to pick up the wedding party and head out from there.
At night Gwen Fisher dreams of hairpins. “I’m pinning all night long,” she says, if there’s to be a big wedding clientele the next day. The planning has been done and the results must be right, first time out. However, if the style isn’t right they will start over. Gwen and her senior and master stylists handle the wedding assignments. “Their work must be up to a standard,” says the beauty expert who has been doing hair for 30 years and now has 12 staff on board.
“Hair must suit the face shape. We will adjust styles tactfully with
anyone who has their heart set on a certain style but we know won’t
result so well in photos. To coordinate the look with what you’re
wearing – you need to take into account the mood you arrive with that
morning,” says Fisher. Then add jewelry and clothes.
“You found the personality in each one of them,” says a pleased patron. For Fisher this is the ultimate compliment.
Tips for wedding appearance preparation (page 1 | page 2) are on the salon’s website at www.pureelementsspa.com . People are often surprised to learn that hair preparation begins six months prior to the wedding. “That’s when to begin your hair cut regime including conditioners and style ideas,” the salon owner says with a studied tone. Monthly mani-pedis and facials are part of the process. And it’s important to test hair and skin products ahead of time, to avoid unexpected reactions.
Whether the wedding itself is small and intimate or large and formal, indoors or outdoors, the day is big, but the preparation can be made manageable and memorable. If the wedding party has come to Sooke for a ‘destination wedding’ it is even more important to have planned ahead. MM
