"Delightful,
intelligent, quirky, beautiful feathered friends.
Birds can make
lovely pets! Investing a bit of time learning about the different
breeds, and finding a caring, responsible, knowledgeable breeder
and/or rescuer, is well worth your time. One site to start with is
the Vancouver Island Caged Bird Society <www.vicbs.ca>.
Choosing the right breed, like with all pets, is crucial. Small, social breeds with reasonable life spans are best. Wiskers & Waggs staff favourites are cockatiel, budgie, conure and senegal. These birds want to interact with us. With daily handling and socialization, they are able to really be part of the family and enjoy life outside of their cage. Afterall, if a creature must be caged at times, by rights we need to let it out to stretch its wings, legs and mind.
Quality maintenance, diet and lots of activity toys are very
important for a happy and healthy bird. Nutritious treats are a
must-have. Great for training and enjoyed by all!
Last but certainly not least, have
contacts at the ready for reputable avian veterinarians. Sooke
Veterinary Hospital has such referrals to assist in that regard. A great
relationship with a vet you trust is invaluable! If a bird is the pet of
your choice, you will be rewarded with plenty of laughs and hours of
fun." MM
