Brookeline Publishing House Inc. (publisher of MapleLine Magazine) has launched a news writing mentoring program for news writers (ages 17+) in Sooke, BC. The first year of the program starts in October 2009 with monthly workshops through to June 2010.

The goal of this program is to enhance the news writing and photojournalism skills of keen young adults so they can make positive and professional contributions to print and online publications across Canada.

The program cost per youth participant (age 17 to 22 years) is only $299.95+gst. Regular adult fee is $599.95 for the full program. This fee is payable in full by the registration deadline of October 22, 2009. The program runs October 2009 through June 2010. [Note: spreading the fee over two payments will be authorized in special circumstances.]  If joining the program after Oct.22/09, Youth will pay $59+gst per month, adults pay $95+gst per month.  See registration details.

The program consists of monthly workshops on news writing, copy editing, what makes a good story, how to submit a print or online story, photojournalism, Canadian Press Style, and more. Between workshops there will be on-going mentoring on various news writing and research projects throughout the 9-month program (October 2009 through June 2010). The curriculum has been developed by Mary P. Brooke, publisher/editor of MapleLine Magazine. There will be guest speakers from various areas of journalism, business, government and community to address how certain topics are handled by the media.

A participation certificate will be awarded to each student who fully participates in the 9-month program. This year's program has included a special bonus session in Sept.09 for students in the Writing 12 class at EMCS.

Public forums about various topics in business, journalism and current events will be held every couple of months starting in 2010. These are public events with a panel of guest speakers -- everyone welcome.

Thurs. May 13, 2010 - PUBLIC FORUM. Environmental Issues for the Coming Decade. Featured guest speaker: Guy Dauncey. Hosted by MapleLine Magazine.

Wed. Sept.29, 2010 - PUBLIC FORUM. Generation "Y": prospects for youth in the coming decade.  Hosted by MapleLine Magazine.

Wed. Nov.24, 2010 - PUBLIC FORUM. Coincidence - let's figure it out!  Hosted by MapleLine Magazine.

Public event admission at the door by donation (minimum of $5 per person is recommended). Guest speakers will receive an honorarium. All proceeds will support the Young Journalists Mentoring Program.

The Sept.24 free info session provided details about program registration.Brookeline Publishing House Inc. underwrites the cost of the MapleLine Journalism Mentoring Program, along with contributions from corporate sponsors and paying subscribers.

This is a program that runs on its own steam, with the commitment of participants and the support of businesses and community leaders who realize the importance of well-written news. We are a business school, and we choose to operate without dependency on government grants or community grants at the current time. 

Sponsors to date (Sept.25/09) include the Sooke Harbour Chamber of Commerce and Village Food Markets. Sponsors receive ongoing promotion within program materials and announcements, as well as ads in the print edition of MapleLine.

Sponsors may recommend guest speakers and are asked to provide a meeting space for one or more sessions during the year.

Sponsors may provide program materials -- with or without corporate logos at their discretion (e.g. notepads, pens, memory sticks, shopping bags, computer software, payment of travel costs, event reminder flyers, etc.).
